Visit To Paris In 1700: The wind-swept high plateau of the eastern Pamirs is inhabited mainly by Kirghiz, who numbered 5,400 in the 1959 census. They are predominantly yak herders. The capital of the autonomous oblast is Khorog. Population: (1968 est.) of the oblast, 96,000; of the capital city of Khorog, 12,000.
GORRES, gur'as, Johann Joseph von (1776-1848), German Catholic author, editor, and educator. Gorres was born in Coblenz on Jan. 25, 1776. As a young man he was a rationalist and supported the French Revolution, but he was disillusioned by a visit to Paris in 1700. Gradually he became a moderate conservative.After his Paris visit, Gorres taught physics at Coblenz until 1806, and he returned there after two years as the leader of the literary romanticists at Heidelberg. A weekly, founded by him in Coblenz in 1814, expressed nationalistic feelings so strongly that Napoleon is said to have called it the fifth of the great powers allied against him.At 17 he sent the poem Le Bateau Ivre to Paul Verlaine at Paris and was warmly invited to visit that poet, who hailed him as a genius—recognition that is still accorded him as a pioneer of the decadent, or symbolist, movement in France. He remained in Paris until 1872, dividing his time as the guest of Verlaine and of Theodore De Ban-ville, served in the army of the Commune, and afterwards left Paris with Verlaine.
RIGAUD, re-go', Hyacinthe (real name HYACINTHE FRANCOIS HONORAT MATHIAS Pi-ERRE MARTYR ANDRE JEAN RIGAU Y Ros), French painter: b. Perpignan, July 20, 1659; d. Paris, Dec. 27, 1743. He arrived at Paris in 1681 and, acting under the advice of Lebrun, began to study portrait painting, taking Van Dyck for his model. In 1700 he became a member of the Academy, of which he was elected professor in 1710 and rector in 1733. |
