Vertical Face: The two-circle goniometer has two independent graduated circles, one horizontal and one vertical. The crystal to be measured is centered on the axis of the vertical circle and positioned over the axis of the horizontal circle. The position of each face on the crystal may then be determined by rotating the vertical circle and swinging the entire vertical-circle assembly about the horizontal circle. In effect, the latitude and longitude of the normal to each face is determined.
Some simple antenna radiation patterns for vertical antennas solidly connected to the earth (grounded) are shown in Figs. 14, 15, and 16. Other antennas may be vertical but insulated from the earth, or they may be horizontal.
The horizontal pattern of a vertical ground antenna (Fig. 14b) is circular; that is, it transmits or receives signals equally in all horizontal directions. In a vertical plane a vertical grounded antenna may direct most of its energy along the ground, as is the case for a Vz -wavelength antenna, or it may direct most of its energy skyward at an angle of 30°, as is the case for a 1-wavelength antenna (Fig. 14c).
Woods are formally numbered 1 through 5, although higher numbers are sometimes used. The No. 1 wood, called a driver, has a large head and a deep, almost vertical face. The length averages between 42 and 43 inches for men and 41 and 42 inches for women; the weight, 13 to 14 ounces and 12 to 13 ounces respectively. Designed to supply maximum distance, the driver is used off the tees of the longer holes-par 4's and par 5's. |
