Unexpected Picture Opportunities: 5. The photographer is provided a guide or framework into which he can fit the unexpected picture opportunities which arise. Even his random shooting will consist largely of pictures with a purpose. When he has a list of definite ideas to illustrate, he will be stimulated to shoot more pictures than if he were working with only the general idea of the picture story. Thus, the script, rather than restricting the photographer, is likely to allow him to work with even greater freedom than he would without it. The script tells him only those definite pictures which he must provide, but then points the directions in which he can venture most profitably in going beyond the script.
Advances in one area are tied in with or spur advances in other areas. Seemingly isolated discoveries often combine to bring unexpected solutions to particular problems. They can be fitted together to form new wholes that are greater than the sum of the parts or lead to other unexpected innovations.
The unexpected discoveries or applications are called serendipitous.3 Effects that combine or interact are called synergistic. Too often, we underrate them.
Opportunities in industrial photography as suggested here are only the entering wedges into what can be a big business. These opportunities in themselves can provide a versatile photographer with an enviable income, but beyond them are opportunities with template cameras, microfilm, high speed flash, X-ray photos, blueprint reproduction, copying of paper work, and other ramifications of the photographic process which are still in the development stage. |
