Times In History: In 1855 J. H. Newman, then rector of the Catholic University at Dublin, called him to the chair of geograph and modern history and later the department of English literature was assigned him. His original works comprise lectures On Subjects of Ancient and Modern History (1859) ; On Subjects of Modern History and Biography (1864) ; On the Life, Writings and times in history of Edmund Burke (1869), together with poetry and translations.
His History of Acadia (1879) was widely used. His later publications include The Life and times in history of Sir Leonard Tilley (1896) and The History of New Brunswick (2 vols., 1909). In both of these works he projected the historical and contemporary points of view of the Liberal party. Hannay was made a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1906. In 1869 he was appointed to the chair of English at Asbury, and in 1879 became vice-president of the university. The endowment of $2,000,000 bestowed upon the university by W. C. DePauw was secured largely through Ridpath's efforts, and under his management it received its new name of DePauw. He published Academic History of the United States (1874-1875) ; Popular History of the United States (1877) ; Life of James A.~ Garfield (1882); Cyclopaedia of Universal History (1880-1884) ; Great Races of Mankind (1893); Life and times in history of Gladstone (1898); History of the United States (1900), etc. |
