Society In London In 1660: The Royal Society. Meetings that had begun at Gresham College for the purpose of exchanging scientific ideas eventually led to the formation of the Royal Society in London in 1660. The society was formally incorporated two years later by King Charles II.In the past these people were also generally social figures and "in society." London society differed from that of other European capitals in that it was never divided into "diplomatic society," "literary society," "musical society," and so on. There was only "society," in which everyone knew everyone else, and the tradition lingers.
Most of these mosques date from well after World War II. In 1970 it was estimated there were 230,000 Hindus. They have a temple in London and meet regularly in a number of provincial centers. The roughly 140,000 Sikhs have their own temple in London and also other meeting places. Buddhists have three temples in London, representative of their different traditions, and the Buddha Society has about 30 groups scattered about the country. |
