Poverty In Paris On Feb: One of Goldoni's best-known comedies was written in French, Le bourru bienfaisant (1771; The Beneficent Bear), as were his lengthy Memoirs (1784-1787; Eng. tr., 1814; rev. ed., 1877). The royal pension granted him on his retirement was cut off by the revolutionaries, and he died in poverty in Paris on Feb. 6, 1793.
At the base of the bank the lichens and mosses grow, for winter has no effect on them, and curling about the grays, greens, and browns is a colony of poverty grass (Danthonia spicata). By summer the 6-inch leaves of poverty grass are nondescript but by November, the leaves curl even tighter than usual, looking more like wood shavings left by a tiny carpenter than any grass. Heavy snows may come and bury these plants, but with every thaw their elfin beauty returns.
The Selective Shopper on the Prowl Paris is a shopper's heaven, especially if the shopper is on the distaff side. It is an expensive heaven, in these days, notably excepting perfumes, which are far cheaper in Paris than in America, but the cost doesn't seem to frighten tourists away. Paris est toujours Paris. |
