Photographic Picture:

Photographic Picture the other fellow's pictures. When you look at photographic illustrations in magazines and books, remember that in every case a photographer looked at the picture from behind a camera. He composed it in his finder, and perhaps also cropped and enlarged to get the picture you see. Look at pictures with this in mind, and determine why they were made and presented as you see them. Far from harming the picture, the small figure emphasizes the grandeur of Old Faithful geyser. Whether you are looking at your own or someone else's picture, ask yourself these questions. Is it pleasing to look at; that is, are the objects so related in position as to create an agreeable effect? Can you tell at a glance what the picture portrays? If you can say "yes" to these questions, it is safe to assume that the picture has reasonably good composition. More important, it is enjoyable and satisfying.

Largely because of the importance of his scientific contributions, notably in orthochromatic emulsions, Vogel's activity as a teacher and promoter of photography as an art form has been generally overlooked. Yet one-third of his Handbook of Photography is devoted to photographic aesthetics.27 In 1891 he expanded that section and published it separately, with the title Photographische Kunstlehre; oder, Die kunstlerischen Grundsdtze der Lichtbildnerei ("Photographic Art Teaching; or, The Artistic Principles of Photographic Picture Making") — the first textbook on the subject written by a German.28 From Vogel Stieglitz acquired not only a brilliant technique, but also an introduction to pictorial photography, especially as practiced by H. P. Robinson, upon whose theories Vogel heavily depended.

Many associations of other photographic specialists exist also. These include the American Association of School Photographers, Society of Cinema Photographers, Association of Architectural Photographers, Evidence Photographers International Council, and many others. A more complete listing, with the addresses where these organizations may be contacted, can be found in Photography Market Place, edited by Fred W. McDarrah and published by R.R. Bowker Company, 1180 Avenue of the Americas, New York, New York 10036. This guidebook also contains the names and addresses of allied associations in the photographic industry including associations that represent color labs, picture framers, studio suppliers, and photographic dealers.
