Periods Of History: Cultural Influences. Because of their curiosity, ingenuity, and gregariousness, as well as for this basic geographic reason, the Greeks as a people have never developed in isolation from the outside world. Their long and distinguished history has always been tied to that of other peoples and cultures, with periods of cultural borrowing alternating with periods of cultural lending.Sir Arthur Evans set up a system that was long standard for Aegean chronology; he based his scheme on synchronisms with Egypt according to the Egyptian dating in Eduard Meyer's Aegyptische Chronologic. Evidence has tended to confirm Evans' dating of the Early Minoan Periods, but little chronological weight can be attached to subdivisions that he made in the last two periods of his system, which often overlap considerably. The Minoan chronology given here follows that of J. L. Caskey and F. Matz in the revised edition of the Cambridge Ancient History.
However, in the 18th century, while still under Ottoman rule, the Greeks began to feel the first impact of modern Western civilization. It gave them a new appreciation of their classical heritage and intensified their desire for national independence. Thus, since the 15th century, the Greeks have been in one of their receiving periods of history.
