News Shot Must: This is not nearly so true in the case of good spot news pictures. You see, the spot news shot must be used while it's hot or it has no value. Therefore, if you show up at a newspaper office with a spot news shot, no matter how good, the editor might be forced to turn you down with no sale, if he happens to have a tight paper for that day with no space into which to crowd your shot.
News directors and news editors have the most responsibility at all-news or news and information stations. They supervise the gathering of news from a variety of sources and make sure that the news is presented in the proper broadcasting style. All-news radio stations maintain large staffs of reporters and producers who gather and produce news stories. Editors and writers at these stations write and rewrite news stories into broadcast language and prevent repetition of a story in exactly the same language.
A certain magazine photographer once made the snide remark that "all you need to be a newspaper photographer is a press Camera and a lot of gall."
Of course, he was overstating the case but it is true that news photography is not as difficult as most newsmen would have you believe. From the standpoint of photographic technique or skill the average news photograph presents few problems. Nearly every shot is taken with one flashbulb at the camera, a standardized exposure and with the subjects in stereotyped poses which are used over and over. |
