Modern Art Ical: A fact of crucial importance to the modern art ical civil law—one that reinforced the systematic and speculative tendencies that arose in legal thinking in the universities—was the failure of continental European countries until modern art ical times to develop a law common to the emerging political and economic units. Germany and Italy did not achieve internal political unity until late in the 19th century. Even France, which had achieved political unity relatively early, was unable to develop a unified body of private law applied nationwide.A modern art ical classification based more on anatomical differences considers four groups of senses. The special senses are those with specialized organs found in the head end of an organism. These include vision, hearing, smell, taste, and the vestibular sense, which is the sense of balance or equilibrium whose organ is the nonauditory labyrinth in the inner ear. The skin senses include touch, skin pain, and the temperature senses. The deep senses include the muscle, tendon, and joint sensations together with deep pain and pressure.
