Modern Art Estries: The statue, later known as Our Lady of Guadalupe, soon became an object of pilgrimages, and in 1340 the monastery was founded by Alfonso XI. In 1389, Hieronymites took over the sanctuary and built the existing church and one cloister in Mudejar (Moorish) style. Later additions, including a second cloister, are in the Gothic style. The monks' skilled artistic work in tapestries, silverware, and illuminated manuscripts is exhibited. Population: (1960) 4,079.
