From San Francisco To Hawaii:

From San Francisco To Hawaii Hawaii has two national parks: Hawaii Volcanoes, with its Mauna Loa and Kilauea craters, on the island of Hawaii; and Haleakala, on Maui. One of the great state preserves is the Waimea Canyon of Kauai. Many of the recreational areas are carved out of mountain lands preserved by the kings and handed down to the territory and the state. These spaces include more than 20 state parks.

Hawaii presumably contained no mammals except the bat and the Hawaiian monk seal when the Polynesian colonizers arrived. The largest mammal they brought in was the dog. The cows, goats, sheep, deer, and horses that now help to populate the islands are all later imports, as is the mongoose—brought to Hawaii to thin out the rats that had arrived as ship passengers. Many of Hawaii's present bird species are also imports, although about a dozen species of native birds remain.

His son JOHN RODGERS, naval aviator, b. Washington, B.C., Jan. 15, 1881 ; d. Philadelphia, Pa. Aug. 27, 1926, was graduated from the Naval Academy in 1903 and attained the rank of commander in 1920. He served in the Spanish War and on the North Sea mine barrage in World War I. In 1925, he made a sensational attempt at a non-stop flight from San Francisco to Hawaii. Within 200 miles off Honolulu he was forced down in the water and was rescued with his four companions.
