Fine Art Link: The surveyor's link (7.92 inches) is the length of one link or Vioo part of a surveyor's chain of 66 feet, and is used in the survey of lands.
The quarter (9 inches) is sometimes used in measuring cloth (more frequently in Great Britain) to designate a quarter of a yard. A unit of the same length called the span was originally half a cubit (an English measure of 18 inches) but probably has not been used in modern times as an officially recognized unit.
The engineer's link (12 inches) is the hundredth part of the engineer's chain of 100 feet, and is decimally divided. The 10th of the engineer's link is 1.2 inches.
The only thing that is missing as a link between them is the halter. Interestingly, this means that there is not really any motivation for any movement within the picture, for movement would have to be initiated by some kind of action. Instead there is an imaginary link between man and nature, caused by the harmony of their movements, their grace and classical proportions. This is reminiscent of a Greek statue whose most fragile parts have broken off and been lost so that only Beauty can be admired.
Starting with the Black Ball Line in 1818, these tough ships served as the principal link between the New World and the Old, as they carried their passengers, mails, and fine art Link freight across 3,000 miles of the roughest seas in the world. Their Yankee captains kept driving them as fast as they could go, even through winter gales when most shipping stayed in port. Their object was not so much spectacular bursts of speed as steady, consistent performance. |
