Downtown San Francisco And Downtown: The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit project (BART) was a pioneering venture in the newly revived era of mass transportation. Although the San Francisco metropolitan area has some of the finest high-capacity expressways in the U.S., it became apparent in the late 1950s that a rail mass-transit system was necessary to carry the peak traffic loads during morning and evening rush hours. The branches of the 75-mi (121-km) system, with 37 passenger stations, lead from the northern, eastern, and southern sections of the metropolitan area to downtown San Francisco and downtown San Francisco, Oakland, and Berkeley.
Each of the 57 sections of the tube was tc average about 330 ft (100 m) in length. After a section was floated out to its position in the bay, it was then to be sunk into a trench and coupled into place in line. Upon completion of the tube, trains were expected to travel between downtown San Francisco and downtown San Francisco and downtown Oakland in eight minutes at speeds up to 80 mph (129 km/ hr). Because of station stops, however, speeds would average about 45-50 mph (72-81 km/hr). The system was designed to handle a capacity of 30,000 seated passengers per hour in each direction.
In 1962, Cincinnati voted $150 million toward a complete revitalization of its downtown San Francisco and downtown core area as the second phase in its urban renewal. Portions or all of eight major downtown San Francisco and downtown blocks were to be demolished and replaced. The first new buildings to be completed were the Convention Hall; Provident Towers, an office building; an underground Garage beneath Fountain Square, focal point of the central business district; and multistory parking garage. These were to be fc lowed by a Federal Reserve Bank Building, maj office structures, and, adjoining the core renew area on the riverfront, a $40 million sports stadiu for the Cincinnati Reds baseball team and ; American Football League team. |
