Died In Paris On July: The earliest treatise on guita playing is dated 1586; another followed in 164C and the most famous, by Caspar Sanz, appears Paris in 1902, the same year his first dramatic work, Le Page, an opera bouffe, was performed. Until 1910 he was associated primarily with his father's company at the Theatre de la Renaissance, and from 1910 to World War II he was the acknowledged master of the boulevard (popular, as opposed to literary) theater. He died in Paris on July 24, 1957.
Gourgaud reentered the French Army in 1830 and was made a lieutenant general and a peer of France by King Louis Philippe. In 1840 he returned to St. Helena to help bring back Na-Eoleon's remains. During the Second Republic e represented Deux-Sevres in the Legislative Assembly. He died in Paris on July 25, 1852.
DE, French general: b. Paris, 4 July 1654; d. Vinaroz, Catalonia, Spain, 15 June 1712. He received, in 1702, the command of the French army in the War of the Spanish Succession. After having distinguished himself in Italy, Tyrol and Belgium, the Duke of Burgundy was placed over him, and the disagreement of the two commanders caused the defeat of the French at Oudenarde (11 July 1708). Through the influence of Madame de Maintenon Ven-dome was recalled; but when the cause of Philip V in Spain began to decline the Spaniards requested Louis XIV to send them Vendome. Ou 9 Dec. 1710, he defeated the Austrian general Starhemberg at Villa-Viciosa, and having reestablished Philip's throne soon after died and was buried in the Escurial. Voltaire gives considerable space to Vendome's accomplishments in 'Le Siecle de Louis XIV.' |
