Device For Portrait Ure:

Device For Portrait Ure It was soon discovered that Alberti's theoretical window could become actual, simply by drawing on a pane of glass positioned vertically while looking through a sight or eyepiece opposite the center of the pane. Albrecht Diirer illustrated in 1525 the use of such a device for portrait ure for portraiture, and noted that it was "good for all those who want to make a portrait of somebody, but are not sure about it.

The use of lines is gaining importance for the arrangement of the picture, and this is what heralds his next period. In his self-portrait of spring 1907 (p. 32), painted shortly afterwards, lines have become the dominating structural device for portrait ure. Facial features are marked by broad, fast strokes of the brush, which also delineate the other areas in the picture.

However, although a long focal length lens is mandatory, it need not be expensive. The utmost of critical sharpness in a portrait lens is not necessary, or even desired, since considerable diffusion can be tolerated in portrait negatives. Your lens needn't be in a shutter for strictly studio portraits, either. A lens in barrel is perfectly satisfactory, since you can provide yourself with a simple Packard shutter to use behind the lens. Many portrait men actually prefer the Packard to the more costly between-the-lens shutters.
