Chip Shot: What are the limitations on circuit size and complexity for a single silicon chip? On any wafer there are usually tiny, randomly distributed flaws—inherent defects in the silicon crystal structure—or tiny dust particles that are embedded into the wafer surface during processing. There cannot, however, be any defects on the chip at any critical point in the circuit. The larger the chip, the more flaws it is likely to have, and the smaller the chip, the greater the probability that it will have no flaws. At present, the largest dimension of the chip is less than 1/4 in. (6.4 mm).
Pitch and Chip Shots. Pitches and chips are golf shots in miniature. They both put the ball from the fairway or the rough to the green, with accuracy the prime motive.
A pitch is a lofted shot with backspin on the ball, played anywhere from 100 to 10 yards from the green. Power is of no concern, so little body pivot is required. The shot is played from a slightly open stance and with a shortened grip (down from the top of the shaft). The back-swing, and consequently the follow-through, are thus reduced to about two thirds the normal arc. The best clubs to use for a pitch are those with a great deal of loft, such as the No. 9 iron or wedge.
In the shot put a heavy metal sphere is propelled from a circle seven feet in diameter; four feet of its circumference—in the forepart of the circle—contains a toeboard four inches high. In this event the shot is not allowed to pass behind or below the shoulder, so that technically it is "put" rather than "thrown." A 16-pound shot is used in major masculine competition, such as in the Olympic Games, national championships, and intercollegiate competition; the 12-pound shot is usually used by males in secondary schools, and the 8-pound shot is used in feminine competition, including the Olympic Games. In the games the shot put is also one of the 10 decathlon events for men. A put of over 65 feet has been made with the 16-pound shot, and a woman has exceeded 56 feet with the 8-pound shot. |
