He studied at Caius College, Cambridge, and at the University of Padua (1600-1602), where he received his M. D. In 1607 he became a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, and two years later he became physician to St. Bartholomew's Hospital in London. He also lectured in anatomy at the Royal College of Physicians in London and was physician to King James I and Charles I. In 1654 he became president of the Royal Society of Physicians. He died in London on June 3, 1657.

He began as a chorister there and after 1673 was the apprentice of John Kingston, keeper of the royal instruments, whose post he eventually assumed, in 1683. Having succeeded Matthew Locke in 1677 as composer for Charles II's string ensemble, and John Blow in 1679 as organist at Westminster Abbey, Purcell became one of three organists of the Chapel Royal in 1682. Though he spent much of his later life composing for the London theater, he continued his work as court musician until his death, on Nov. 14, 1695, in London. |
