Bishop Of London: GORE, Charles (1853-1932), English Anglican bishop and theologian. Gore was born at Wimbledon, Surrey, on Jan. 23, 1853. Educated at Oxford, he was a fellow of Trinity College there from 1875 to 1894. In 1894 he was made a canon of Westminster and in 1902 bishop of Worcester. In 1905 he became bishop of the new diocese of Birmingham and in 1911 bishop of Oxford. His episcopate was marked by a strong interest in social problems, and he was a leader among the Christian Socialists. Gore resigned his see in 1919 and devoted himself to writing. He died in London on Jan. 17, 1932.In 1550, on the deposition of Bonner, Ridley was made bishop of London, and distinguished himself by his tempered zeal in favor of Protestantism, and especially by his liberality and kindness toward the family of his predecessor. In 1553, in a sermon before Edward VI, he made an appeal for the destitute London poor, and as a result of subsequent conferences the king and corporation of London determined to build Christ's Hospital, St.
Seabury as the first Episcopal bishof America. He then sailed for England, and wa in London more than a year for consecratior the English bishops. Owing to the connec between the Church of England and the s1 various political reasons stood in the way, anc finally decided to apply to the Scottish bisk who were not under the jurisdiction of the chti of England. On Nov. 14, 1784, Seabury was cordingly consecrated at Aberdeen by the bis and coadjutor-bishop of that see and by bishop of Moray and Ross. |
