Biography And History: In 1855 J. H. Newman, then rector of the Catholic University at Dublin, called him to the chair of geograph and modern history and later the department of English literature was assigned him. His original works comprise lectures On Subjects of Ancient and Modern History (1859) ; On Subjects of Modern History and Biography (1864) ; On the Life, Writings and Times of Edmund Burke (1869), together with poetry and translations.
Biography and History. Of Goldsmith's biographies the finest is The Life of Richard Nash (1762), an engaging study of the famous Beau of Bath. Goldsmith presents him as "a man of no real distinction, a little king of a little people," but still an interesting human being.
The traditional anecdotes were objectively examined, and historic figures became living personalities. In his masterly prose, Ssu-ma Ch'ien depicts persons of the lower classes as well as kings and emperors. The Historical Memoirs are considered the first comprehensive Chinese history and the prototype of subsequent biography. Ssu-ma Ch'ien's follower and imitator Pan Ku, in his History of the Former Han Dynasty, set an example for later dynastic historians with his erudition and thorough treatment of all cultural subjects. |
