Author Of History Of Craft: He was one of the founders of the Lakeside Home for Little Children in 1883, as well as the Hospital for Sick Children. He sat in the Canadian Parliament from 1896 to 1901. Author of History of Craft and Capitular Masonry in Canada (1888) ; History of Cryptic, Templar and A. and A. S. Rite Masonry in Canada (1888) ; Robertson's Landmarks of Toronto (5 vols., 1905), and editor of Diary of Mrs. John Graves Simcoe (1911).
In each town, the craft guilds split off from the merchant guilds. Each craft guild was concerned only with its own craft. It elected officers, established regulations, and provided for meeting halls. Picturesque guildhalls arose on the main square or at the marketplace in each town. Rows of guildhalls appeared along quays.
Classes of Craftsmen. Generally each craft guild had three classes of members—masters, journeymen, and apprentices.
ROBERTS, SIR Charles George Douglas,Canadian poet and author: b. Douglas, York County, N. B., Jan. 10, 1860; d. Toronto, Ont, Nov. 26, 1943. A leading figure in the emergence of a national literature after the confederation of the Canadian colonies into the Dominion, Sir Charles was also the first Canadian to be knighted (1935) for his contributions to literature. A voluminous writer, he was the author of 67 books of poetry, fiction, history and biography. |
