Academic History: He studied at the j Normale Superieure, Paris, and at ficole : de Rome, becoming for a time professor i history of art at the former. He was (tailed to the chair of history of music at the Sorbonne. Although he is remembered chiefly for his immense novel, Jean-Christophe, published in 10 volumes from 1904 to 1912, and considered a modern classic, he was well known among academic circles for his penetrating studies of artists and arts, particularly musicians and music.
In 1869 he was appointed to the chair of English at Asbury, and in 1879 became vice-president of the university. The endowment of $2,000,000 bestowed upon the university by W. C. DePauw was secured largely through Ridpath's efforts, and under his management it received its new name of DePauw. He published Academic History of the United States (1874-1875) ; Popular History of the United States (1877) ; Life of James A.~ Garfield (1882); Cyclopaedia of Universal History (1880-1884) ; Great Races of Mankind (1893); Life and Times of Gladstone (1898); History of the United States (1900), etc.
3RAHAM, gra'am, Frank Porter (1886- ), American educator and public official. He was 5orn in Fayetteville, N. C., on Oct. 14, 1886. He *raduated from the University of North Carolina n 1909 and received a master's degree in history rom Columbia in 1916. In 1914 he accepted an nstructorship in history at the University of >Jorth Carolina, becoming a full professor in 927. Appointed president of the university in 1930, he gained a national reputation for his defense of academic freedom and built the school into one of the foremost educational institutions in the United States. |
